The Idea and promise of Oceania as a politically, economically and culturally autonomous region has captured the imagination of politicians, activists and scholars for generations, including Albert Norman’s reclamation of the world’s seventh continent; Epeli Hau’ofa’s “Our Sea of Islands”; Albert Wendt’s “Towards a New Oceania; the Pacific Islands Forum’s “Blue Pacific”; and the Wonsolwara’s youth activism. While the promise has yet to materialize, the Oceania hypothesis remains a valid one for the liberation of the Pacific Islands.

This site is committed to analysis of the power, politics and promise of the Oceania Hypothesis within the contemporary context of global capitalism, including shifting centers of power and challenges to dominant liberal ideology.
